White Rock Fire Rescue Encourages Everyone to Drop, Cover, and Hold Today

White Rock Fire Rescue invites residents, local businesses, and the broader community to participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 10:16 a.m. This province-wide initiative offers a valuable opportunity to practice essential earthquake safety steps: Drop, Cover, and Hold On.

According to ShakeOut BC, British Columbia is the most seismically active region in Canada, with more than 3,000 earthquakes occurring annually. During the drill, residents may receive a cell-phone broadcast message via the City’s Alertable App to prompt participation.

White Rock Fire Rescue urges everyone to follow these four key steps during ShakeOut and in the event of a real earthquake:

  1. DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you).

  2. Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table and protecting your head and neck.

  3. HOLD ON until the shaking stops.

  4. STAY THERE for 60 seconds, allowing unstable objects time to settle.

White Rock residents can register for Alertable, the City’s emergency notification system, which delivers emergency alerts via text, email, or phone. For earthquake preparedness resources, including how to build an emergency kit or grab-and-go bag, visit PreparedBC.ca.

Crescent Rock Hot Spot

Tuesday October 14, 2025

The hot spot in Canada really depends on what criteria is being used.   The town of Lytton often holds down the daily hot spot during the summer.  It also holds the dubious distinction of having the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada, reaching a scorching 49.6°C (121.3°F) in 2021 before most of the town was incinerated by a fast moving wildfire.  The B.C. interior cities of Osoyoos, Penticton, Kamloops and Kelowna are all known to be hot spots as well, with any of them capable of topping the daily record.  Back in Ontario, the towns of Windsor and St.Catherines also experience warm summer weather that can be stifling.  Victoria may not be the hottest but it has the mildest climate in Canada with little frost or snow and it is the only city with a true Mediterranean climate.  It also holds the Canadian record of going 718 days without freezing from Dec. 23 1998 to Dec. 10, 2000.
