White Rock Tower Plan – What Aren’t They Telling Us?

Apparently, the White Rock City Hall never mentioned that their planned 25-storey tower, THE HUB project will also take over the lot currently occupied by that 6-storey apartment building on the right. Looks like they’re just waiting for it to be torn down.

The above picture and text was recently posted on social media.

As if there is not enough mis-information regarding the proposed White Rock Community Hub.

The Peace Arch News has figured out they have caught lightening in a bottle due to the high interest and opinions on the proposed community hub. Week after week there has been a steady stream of Letters to the Editor section chastising (the most polite word I could think of) council and city staff for even considering building a so called Highrise Hug on the city property at the corner of Russell avenue and Johnston road.

To refresh your memory the current council in a vote of 4-3 directed the city to explore building a community hub on said property. Only myself and councillors TREVELYAN and KLASSEN voted in opposition.

There are many questions that must be answered as far as I am concerned. None of the answers would cause me to vote in support to building a highrise on a piece of land the city has expropriated from Imperial Oil under the guise the property would be turned into a park. This was the plan put forth by the BALDWIN controlled council back 2014-2018. Myself and the rest of council unanimously approved the purchase for park space given the incredible number of high-rises that were or were about to be plunked down in our town centre.

An article like the above only inflames the situation. Most readers won't get past the headline and the firestorm will be fully underway before the city can get corrected information out. To say the least I have an inside track on this topic and if there has been any plans on purchasing the adjoining building mentioned in the article, it has been a very very private conversation and has not included the entire council. I doubt its validity.

The city recently hired and introduced an independente consultant DARCY DUPONT who is currently pouring over all the possibilities, weighing out the pros and cons, meeting with community stakeholders and speaking personally with staff and council. I feel confident his decision will be based on facts and figures.

Does that mean I will change my vote to the affirmative. No.

The city is soon set to release a timeline of online engagement and Open Houses to attain feedback from the community once they have all the information to present.

So let's all just step back for half a minute take a big deep breath and weigh out all the information.

Save Band in Surrey Schools – Take a Stand for Music Education!

Please join us today to stand up for band programs in Surrey schools. For many children, school is their only opportunity to explore music—an experience that can change their lives forever. Budget cuts should not take away their chance to discover the joy and discipline that comes from learning a musical instrument.

Music helps students thrive. It gives them confidence, community, and a voice. Cutting these programs sends the wrong message—that the arts don't matter. But they do.

We urge all parents, students, and community members to come out and protest these cuts. Let’s send a strong message to SD #36: Our children deserve access to music and the arts. Take your budget cuts elsewhere.

A child’s right to learn, grow, and shine in the arts is worth fighting for. Be there. Make noise. Protect music.

Corruption in Local Government

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke recently responded to allegations that a former municipal employee defrauded the city of $2.5 million, insisting that they have adequate financial safeguards in place. The ex-finance clerk is alleged to have funneled hundreds of cheques to herself, drawing funds from deposits made to the city by developers.

Congratulations On Your Pier Bellingham

Little Squalicum Pier is open to the public for the first time in its long history, giving community members unprecedented access to Bellingham Bay.

“You can’t look at the pier without wondering what it’s like to be out there,” Parks and Recreation Director Nicole Oliver said, “Now, anyone can experience Bellingham Bay from a new perspective.”

The pier was built in 1912. Railcars traveled on it, delivering processed cement products to barges moored offshore. Operations ceased there around 1987, and the Lehigh Hanson/Heidelberg Cement Group transferred the pier to the City on Nov. 22, 2021.

Little Squalicum Pier extends 1,248 feet into the bay, making it the longest, public pier in Washington state

........and the longest on the West Coast between White Rock, B.C., and Pacifica, California.

The unique structure provides a view of the area that previously required a boat.

Respect The Legion

The Crescent Beach #240 Legion on 128 St. across from Crescent Park has been a fixture in the south Surrey community for decades.  Their mission is to serve Veterans, including serving military and RCMP members and their families, to promote Remembrance, and to serve our communities and our country.  Noble goals for sure and the Crescent Beach Legion with its members and loyal volunteers do a great job in fulfilling these goals and being a hub for community activities.  My wife and I are both members of the CB Legion and we regularly attend events there, both inside the building and out in the parking lot.  With running Green Team Gardening, I thought it would be a great idea to take over the grounds maintenance and we have been volunteering our services over the last year to improve the landscaping.  We also help out whenever we can with everything from roof cleaning, clearing off tables, working at the canteen, to selling 50-50 tickets.

As part of its community service, the Legion has three green drop-off bins on the corner of their property across from the #12 Fire Hall. The problem with the bins is not Green Inspiration or the Legion but the people amongst us who see these bins as a free and easy way to get rid of their other unwanted items and outright trash. The bins are set up to receive used clothes and shoes and are clearly marked as such.
